Macarons

Macarons are one of the most famous French desserts. However, did you know that the macaron originally stems from Italy? The famous Catherine de’ Medici brought the treat to France in the 16th century. At this time the ‘maccherone’ were produced in Venetian monasteries. Once the macarons came to France they became widely popular and production became more regular and standardized!

Lamington

Did you ever hear about the origin of an Australian cake that is dipped in chocolate and sprinkled with coconut flakes? Lamington is believed to be invented by accident by a maidservant to Lord Lamington. Whilst working the servant accidentally dropped the cake in melted chocolate. Lord Lamington was not a person of wasteful habits and suggested that it be dipped in coconut to cover the chocolate to avoid messy fingers. The Lord enjoyed the cake and praised the maidservant for her invention! This cake is also found in Croatia; there it is known as Čupavci. This shows how food is able to connect different cultures, even though we live far apart, we still enjoy the same cake!
