Integration without livelihood is not possible for refugees within a host country. In northwestern Kenya, in a refugee camp, 185,000 refugees live with the bare access to electricity, a situation that affects especially women and girls when leaving the camp in search of firewood. The moving Energy Initiative (MEI), a partnership between Energy 4 Impact, Chatham House, Practical Action, the Norwegian Refugee Council and the UNHCR, is creating energy markets in this area of Kenya next to the private sector. This initiative also seeks to lessen hostilities between refugees and host communities over competition for scarce fuel and resources.
