After becoming involved in a protest against the repatriation of North Korean refugees, and with the increased use of the English language in the South Korean university system, a Harvard graduate founded Teach North Korean Refugees, helping those who flee the North learn English, a skill that is increasingly necessary to succeed in the South. To date, the institution has connected over 300 refugees with volunteer tutors, including Yeonmi Park, a refugee who has become a prominent human rights activist, and Eunsun Kim, another refugee who wrote a book about her escape from North Korea.
